Groundwater Contamination in Madison County

Much of Madison County rests on a bed of limestone fractured by an extensive system of fissures, sink holes and caves. This leaves our groundwater vulnerable to contamination by sub-surface wastewater treatment such as with a  septic systems.  Here is a paper that gives some good information about what a karst system is, how it feeds our waterways in Kentucky and how many of our streams are volunerable to  contamination by septic systems and broken sewer lines (see p.33).   Paper on Groundwater & Karst
